Suncorp Metway Ltd is Australia's sixth largest bank and fourth largest general insurance group. It was created in its modern form with the 1996 merger of Suncorp, Metway Bank and the QIDC, (or the Queensland Industry Development Corporation). This was carried out by the Queensland Government – at the time Suncorp and QIDC were Government owned, while Metway was the largest locally based bank in Queensland. It was branded Suncorp Metway in 1999, although this changed to simply “Suncorp” in 2002. However, the registered name of the company is still Suncorp Metway.

Suncorp has 228 retail and business banking outlets, mostly in the state of Queensland, while GIO, who Suncorp owns, has 34 agencies in New South Wales and Victoria. The company has assets of more than $54 billion, and well-over four million customers. Its sponsorship of “Suncorp” Stadium, home of the Brisbane Broncos, has increased awareness of the brand.

Suncorp Metway is the parent company of GIO Insurance, one of Australia's most recognised financial brands, as well as Tasmanian RACT Insurance. It acquired the Promina Group at the beginning of 2007, meaning it now owns AAMI, the Australian Pensioner's Insurance Agency, Just Car Insurance, as well as a number of other well-known insurance brands in Australia and New Zealand.

Suncorp products and services

Suncorp offers products and services is most areas of wealth management and banking, including a full range of personal and business insurance packages, everyday banking, finance, agricultural banking and various business banking options. Home loan assistance and provision is offered, while a choice of superannuation and investment options are also provided by the company. Suncorp is currently the only bank in Australia to use its branch network to provide its own insurance and wealth management products.

Suncorp was the first bank to win the annual Australian Banking and Finance Best Regional Bank award for a fourth time when it won the award in 2006.
