St George Bank was founded as the St George's Cooperative Building Society in 1937, in the Sutherland Shire area south of Sydney. Growing into Australia's largest building society, it subsequently became a bank in 1992. Most of its business is carried out in NSW, although it does have branches in other states, as well as through BankSA in South Australia. The fifth largest bank in Australia in terms of market share, record profits of around $1bn were posted at the end of the financial year 2006, under CEO Gail Kelly – a rise of 17.9 percent on the previous year. The bank has established a well known brand partly due to its dragon logo and affiliation with the St George rugby league team.
